Ok, Hold up.....are you telling me swerb does not find the NFL package worth picking up?
Man we should talk bud, we could maybe work something out if you want to rent/split the NFL package from me for football season....just got to get a receiver and dish, high upfront, but you dont have to have the service year round.

I watch the Browns and the Browns only at 1:00 ... not one of those people that can click. I am locked in. Watch all the commercials.
4:00 .. usually 2 games on. Usually cooking at that time too.
All the rest of the games are televised.

Amazing...the power of the NFL.
Most around the country are similar, follow one primary team, the bulk of the games being on at the same time, yet they still sell coverage.
And I'm well aware of fantasy and gambling, but with other outlets available to track this stuff in real time, I'm just surprised it sells as much.

Let me explain a piece of it....
I live right between DC and Balt. I therefore have only 2 options to watch the browns. Go to bars every Sunday, or get Direct TV. That's it.
So I crunched the numbers on it
$400 (NFL Package)+((potential cable bill - DTV monthly charges)*12) vs. 16*bar bill for two for 4-5 hours
Which comes pretty close to a wash.
Now factor in watching a game at a bar full of ravens and steeler fans on a 40" TV vs watching at home on my 52", much, much higher quality tv.
If I am committed to watching browns football, the cheapest option is the NFL package, whether or not I watch any other games.
And I bet many people are in the same boat and I'd bet it accounts for alot of that surprise you are talking about regarding their ability to sell the product.
Transplants + Fantasy Football = Why its still a great deal for DTV to pay billions for exclusivity on the NFL.
Also, I don't watch commercials. Why watch commercials when you can watch two games in full in the same amount of time without any interruption?
Like I said I watch Pro football not even the same amount of time that a person who watches the 1pm and 4pm games does, yet I can watch 8 games instead of two.
Those 30 min shorts sure beat the hell out of most sitcoms IYAM, even when you know the score already.
