If you are upset by today's game

Unread postby jb » Sun Oct 17, 2010 4:30 pm

You are either

1 ) Retarded

2 ) Gary Benz carrying on a senseless jihad againt Mangini

Discuss?

Psst - We may have a QB and this team fights like mofos.

if Managini is tied to the hip with Daball, then buh-bye!

I see the improvement and toughness, but our OC blows!

Signed on all accounts. A win would've been sweeter and feel free to invoke the 24 hour rule, but I'm ready for a McCoy jersey right here and now.

Maybe Daboll can suit up and play wideout himself? Couldn't be any worse than Robo.

Truth be told I can't even argue much with Daboll this game.. He had the kid coming out throwing down field right from the start and McCoy's response was waaaaaaaaaayyyy better than anyone expected

Some typically ignirt calls but I like how he let him sling it around and Colt's prescence in the pocket improved as the game wore on

He's played better than either of the others and at 1-5 wtf does it matter

McCoy will have another challenge next week in the Dome against Gregg Williams's Saints defense. Two road games against very good teams with veteran defensive coordinators. Can't ask for a better start when it comes to throwing the kid in the fire right away.

That throw down the middle to Moore on the goal-line late was fantastic. Put it right on the screws where only his guy could get it. Made some mistakes, but certainly not a bad debut. He'll need to build on it next week.

I'll tell you, I don't think Pittsburgh can dominate us physically anymore. We had a tough time against their pass attack but they did not just maul us up front. We can beat them next time- them and Baltimore, actually.

I wasn't over fond of the Tight End reverse on 3rd down, nor the run on 3rd and 9.

As for most, I was impressed with McCoy today. Did better than I thought and late in the game, when the Steelers loosened up the defensive pressure, he seemed to have a "it's not that fast" moment. As with most young players - MLB pitchers and hitters, NBA players, and NFL QBs - the proof will be in what happens when the opponents figure you out and try to take away your strengths. For a pitcher it might be forcing you to throw inside or a curveball for a strike, for a hitter it might be pounding you inside on the hands or throwing that low and away breaking pitch, for an NBA player it might be forcing you to your left or taking away the easy drive. That moment will eventually happen for Colt and how he responds will go a long way to determine how successful he can be as a starting QB. For now, I will agree with the majority: he should play for the rest of this season. Why not?

Yeah, note my disclaimer. Its just that that's the most I've seen the ball fly down field from a Browns QB in so long that I had to keep rubbing my eyes to make sure it was real, esp considering the joke of a WR group he has to work with

I was kind of impressed with Colt's arm strength. I keep hearing that he had this noodle arm, and saw nothing in the preseason to change that perception. But today, he seemed to be able to make any throw necessary.

McCoy's performance was incredibly encouraging. I wish it was already time for the Saints game to give him another chance to develop.

Also looking forward to the rematch with Pittsburgh January 2nd...hope they're playing for their playoff lives.

I stopped watching the D after my boycott of ERong, no lie, only watched O, might do that from here on out.

Best way I can say it about Colt: He looked like he belonged out there. Typical jitters, could tell he was a rookie most of the game, but he made decisions, reactions and plenty of throws like a 3 year guy that has watched and is physically ready for the game. I know I've said this before as a few others, accuracy is number one for the QB position and Colt seems to naturally have it for the most part. He can move well enough too.

It doesn't mean squat long term right now, but it does mean he needs reps on the field during game time, not just garbage time either..and that we have a young QB on the roster.

IMO 2nd on depth chart from here on out, behind DUH.

I'd give him a B- for today, with my expectations (considering first game ever & v THEM) that grade is a solid B+. If Jake played today he'd be sitting next to Apollo in the hallway after their first fight.

Nice job Colt, you sucked me back in for the time being.

I'm upset we lost but that's about it.

Ward is going to get lost here and there but he is a baller. I think Haden is starting to make steps and he may take longer than Ward (maybe end of '11) to develop but again I see him and think baller. Play Schaefering and Robinson more than Smith and Coleman and they at least are young and have legs. Maybe you hit on one of them. Fujita and Roth are starting to make some plays (sh*t I saw Gocong make a few and I think he's crap) and I love me some Marcus Bernard.

On O, was impressed with McCoy's poise, moxie and accuracy. The stage didn't seem to big for him. I'm with Herm, let's see him against NO who battered Brett Favre and Peyton Manning, but if he can whether that storm then I am going to be a little more impressed. Been c-teased by the likes of Tim-May, DA and Dreamy Brady to judge after one start.

Evan Moore is a WR. Watson an effective TE. Peyton Hillis may not be a fluke but you need a change of pace back to keep the D off balance. If you had a healthy Hardesty and Lauvao then I'd be a little more giddy.

McPeek said it before, this is a QB driven league. It would be nice to find a guy who has a chip on his shoulder because he was mentioned with Bradford, Tebow and Claussen and they went in the first round and a half and he plummeted to the bottom of the third. It would be nice to hit on one of those instead of a Spurgeon Wynn.

Need to see more of the Colt before I anoint him but this is a physical, tough football team that won't bow down to anyone. It's a start.

Didn't watch the D play for a good portion of the second half, strictly b/c asshole was on the field, it is that simple. He's cost us hundreds of yards, dozens of points and two wins at least. He should not be a Cleveland Brown and like our grandpops and uncles did when Paul Brown was fired I am considering doing the same until asshole is gone.

Moral victories are for jerks and lesbians. 1-5. Better than last year, but not good. The LBs are old and slow and the secondary is excremental (save Ward). The Browns #1 pick can't crack the starting lineup in possibly the worst secondary ever. The OL looked poor for 2/3 of the game. Reggie Hodges was the POTG. If he doesn't have 3 kicks inside the ten, they have 2 more scores. Next year? two more drafts? Montantish?

Crimincus.

yes, i'm upset about today's game, but i'm neither # 1 or # 2. it's just how much more of this shit do the sports gods think we can take??? i mean it's been 46 years and counting. how much longer is this going to last??? the entire weekend was a complete and utter failure as the buckeyes lost to ruin any chance of them winning the national championship, the cavs lost to a euro team from moscow led by former cav tragic langdon and the browns lost to pittspuke today. to make matters worse, eric "the genius" wedge got another managerial job. oh the humanity!!!

Hey it bleeping sucks but you can't crap out a legit NFL team in a year, especially one this devoid of upper level talent. Yes, we've had 5 reboots in 11 years but I don't care. The Browns are my cocaine, I am addicted.

He's played better than either of the others and at 1-5 wtf does it matter

I wasn't over fond of the Tight End reverse on 3rd down, nor the run on 3rd and 9.

People are kidnapped by aliens every day. Why can't Daboll look up and see the spinning lights?

Cherry pick.

Overall. well managed game.

A superstar puled 4 great play s out his ass.

Wew beat dennis dixon

Not cherry pick. You don't run a reverse with a Tight End on 3rd Down. Ever.

PS - I know that you're on one of your optimistic jags today, but that don't mean you have to go bat-shit crazy and start claiming that Daboll is competent. Next thing you know you'll be telling me Wright just needs to wear different cleats.

I like this post a lot. If those kicks inside the 5 are touchbacks, we probably are looking at a completely different score.

Today's game just reaffirmed everything we know about this team. The defense will hit you in the mouth and keep on trucking and the offense is 100% incapable of big plays.

I like some of what McCoy did and I didn't like some of what McCoy did. He had a hard time reading the defense. They changed up a lot of looks on him to try and confuse him, and I think it worked. He threw for 213 of his 281 in the second half when the defense had backed off a bit was playing more zone and cover-2 and nearly half of it (140) came when the game was 21-3.

Ah well. Just my personal opinion. I'm not ready to anoint the kid as a starting QB in the league just yet, but today was a pretty good step in the right direction. I'm just taking it with a grain of salt.

Don't label Haden a bust yet. It took Hanford Dixon a couple years to evolve back in the day. Not calling him Top Dawg but CBs take some time to develop.

SD:

Haden made the play of the day on defense , time for him to take over Wrights job .

Have a pet peeve or two .

Didn't make sense with ten seconds in the half and the inbred kicking out of their endzone not to go with an all out punt block , made even less sense not to try it after the penalty and rekick when they were even further backed up .

Just felt it in my bones that Chicken shit Stuckey was gonna fuck up that punt catch when we made the inbred re kick three times.

Fault Dabol for calling pass plays that got Colt sacked twice taking us outta field goal range , you have to better explain to him get rid of it if it ain't there at first blush and don't take a sack under any circumstances or you simply call a run and make sure you give Dawson a Chance in a 7-3 game.

Three certainties about the Browns confirmed by today's game:
(1) Colt McCoy is an NFL caliber quarterback and the first QB the Browns have started that didn't look like he was shitting his pants or saying (to no one in particular) on the sidelines "See when I was in college..." He played like a rookie today. But a good rookie who wants to win and has the physical and mental tools to win.
(2) Eric Wright cannot cover NFL caliber players. Eric Wright is not an NFL caliber player. Not even special teams, because at least those guys are fast or know how to tackle. There is no excuse for his inability to cover anyone with any consistency. He doesn't have the speed, the intelligence or the hands to do anything you want a cornerback to do. It's HIM getting destroyed EVERY WEEK.
(3) Brian Daboll is the worst thing to happen to the Browns offense. Period.

I refuse to jump on the Daboll hatewagon until we actually get receivers. I didn't think I'd ever yearn for KJ and Northcutt or Michael Jackson-Dyson-Jackson.

That's a pretty legit perspective, I don't enjoy watching Dabol work, but he has few tools to work with.

Daboll is not the problem; the hate is unjustified at this point; 3 new quarterbacks have started in 6 games this year, with absolute shit at WR. He may not be the best, but he is not holding back any of these guys.

He gets a bad rap because last year started so much worse than we expected, and so heaped the blame on him... but at this point, I think it's clear that he was the one saddled with DA/BQ, not the other way around.

As a whole I've spent most of the day calming people down, saying "Ya know Colt faced the best defense in the NFL in his debut--he did pretty damn good all things considered."

Any reasoning for being pissed off is A) That Harrison didn't draw a flag for either hit and B) How awful Wright and Brown looked.
mmm, this is, a tasty burger!

even therapist had good things to say about Colt.

Pittsburgh’s quarterback looked him up afterward.

“I told him I was proud of him,” Ben Roethlisberger said. “It was not an easy task, on the road, against our defense. I told him to play well, to keep his head up, and we’ll see him down the road.”

For me, the most encouraging thing was...that was an awful tough situation to get thrown into - and it didn't look too big for him. Huge intangible ILO.

Now, there obviously needs to be skills and a few other intangibles to go with, but it's imperative that you have that quality - all the great ones do.

When Luke McNown was sprinting toward the lockerroom at halftime - to get warm - with time still on the clock, against the Chargers a few years back...that's kinda the opposite. You took one look at that, and didn't even worry about the skills, you were watchin' a loser.

The coaching staff is doing a lot with a little - there is still a dearth of talent, but it's nice to see a few PLAYAS runnin' around out there.

JB: coming after me again? :salute:

Seriously, I don't think most Browns fans are too upset with the loss overall because of the way McCoy played. In fact, though they scored only 10 points, the offense actually played decently. And, for the most part, I think Brian Daboll called a decent game, particularly as the game wore on.

There were certain things that were a little disappointing, such as the constant blitzing and leaving Eric Wright exposed when it's already been proven that he can't hang out there in single coverage and be effective. I thought the play calling early on, when they were trying to protect McCoy by using the wildcat, didn't make much sense. I think the fact that Brian Robiskie is essentially useless is disappointing. I think it's amazing that neither of Harrison's hits garnered a penalty.

The point is that with a team like this there is always lots of little disappointments. But as I noted in my column, this is the 6th straight game in which they had a lead, so that's something. And, again, McCoy showed some real toughness out there, taking some pretty big hits, getting sacked 5 times, and still coming back at the end of the game to lead a late touchdown drive.

Umm... Wright is no better when they aren't attempting to pressure the QB.

They can either give QBs and receivers all day to get loose and find seams everywhere or they can create pressure (theoretically) and leave Wright exposed for less time (theoretically). The issue is not in them wanting to create pressure. The issue is that they don't have the talent to do it w/o selling out on the blitz and that Eric Wright is human waste on the football field.

A novel approach might be to try and upgrade your DL and your CB position. Hiding it does you know good. Teams are going after Wright regardless of down and distance and regardless of who is coming on a blitz.
