McCoy will have another challenge next week in the Dome against Gregg Williams's Saints defense. Two road games against very good teams with veteran defensive coordinators. Can't ask for a better start when it comes to throwing the kid in the fire right away.

That throw down the middle to Moore on the goal-line late was fantastic. Put it right on the screws where only his guy could get it. Made some mistakes, but certainly not a bad debut. He'll need to build on it next week.

I'll tell you, I don't think Pittsburgh can dominate us physically anymore. We had a tough time against their pass attack but they did not just maul us up front. We can beat them next time- them and Baltimore, actually.

As for most, I was impressed with McCoy today. Did better than I thought and late in the game, when the Steelers loosened up the defensive pressure, he seemed to have a "it's not that fast" moment. As with most young players - MLB pitchers and hitters, NBA players, and NFL QBs - the proof will be in what happens when the opponents figure you out and try to take away your strengths. For a pitcher it might be forcing you to throw inside or a curveball for a strike, for a hitter it might be pounding you inside on the hands or throwing that low and away breaking pitch, for an NBA player it might be forcing you to your left or taking away the easy drive. That moment will eventually happen for Colt and how he responds will go a long way to determine how successful he can be as a starting QB. For now, I will agree with the majority: he should play for the rest of this season. Why not?

Typical jitters, could tell he was a rookie most of the game, but he made decisions, reactions and plenty of throws like a 3 year guy that has watched and is physically ready for the game. I know I've said this before as a few others, accuracy is number one for the QB position and Colt seems to naturally have it for the most part. He can move well enough too.

It doesn't mean squat long term right now, but it does mean he needs reps on the field during game time, not just garbage time either..and that we have a young QB on the roster.

I'd give him a B- for today, with my expectations (considering first game ever & v THEM) that grade is a solid B+. If Jake played today he'd be sitting next to Apollo in the hallway after their first fight.

Ward is going to get lost here and there but he is a baller. I think Haden is starting to make steps and he may take longer than Ward (maybe end of '11) to develop but again I see him and think baller. Play Schaefering and Robinson more than Smith and Coleman and they at least are young and have legs. Maybe you hit on one of them. Fujita and Roth are starting to make some plays (sh*t I saw Gocong make a few and I think he's crap) and I love me some Marcus Bernard.

On O, was impressed with McCoy's poise, moxie and accuracy. The stage didn't seem to big for him. I'm with Herm, let's see him against NO who battered Brett Favre and Peyton Manning, but if he can whether that storm then I am going to be a little more impressed. Been c-teased by the likes of Tim-May, DA and Dreamy Brady to judge after one start.

Evan Moore is a WR. Watson an effective TE. Peyton Hillis may not be a fluke but you need a change of pace back to keep the D off balance. If you had a healthy Hardesty and Lauvao then I'd be a little more giddy.

McPeek said it before, this is a QB driven league. It would be nice to find a guy who has a chip on his shoulder because he was mentioned with Bradford, Tebow and Claussen and they went in the first round and a half and he plummeted to the bottom of the third. It would be nice to hit on one of those instead of a Spurgeon Wynn.

Need to see more of the Colt before I anoint him but this is a physical, tough football team that won't bow down to anyone. It's a start.

I like this post a lot. If those kicks inside the 5 are touchbacks, we probably are looking at a completely different score.

Today's game just reaffirmed everything we know about this team. The defense will hit you in the mouth and keep on trucking and the offense is 100% incapable of big plays.

I like some of what McCoy did and I didn't like some of what McCoy did. He had a hard time reading the defense. They changed up a lot of looks on him to try and confuse him, and I think it worked. He threw for 213 of his 281 in the second half when the defense had backed off a bit was playing more zone and cover-2 and nearly half of it (140) came when the game was 21-3.

Ah well. Just my personal opinion. I'm not ready to anoint the kid as a starting QB in the league just yet, but today was a pretty good step in the right direction. I'm just taking it with a grain of salt.

Three certainties about the Browns confirmed by today's game:
(1) Colt McCoy is an NFL caliber quarterback and the first QB the Browns have started that didn't look like he was shitting his pants or saying (to no one in particular) on the sidelines "See when I was in college..." He played like a rookie today. But a good rookie who wants to win and has the physical and mental tools to win.
(2) Eric Wright cannot cover NFL caliber players. Eric Wright is not an NFL caliber player. Not even special teams, because at least those guys are fast or know how to tackle. There is no excuse for his inability to cover anyone with any consistency. He doesn't have the speed, the intelligence or the hands to do anything you want a cornerback to do. It's HIM getting destroyed EVERY WEEK.
(3) Brian Daboll is the worst thing to happen to the Browns offense. Period.

For me, the most encouraging thing was...that was an awful tough situation to get thrown into - and it didn't look too big for him. Huge intangible ILO.

Now, there obviously needs to be skills and a few other intangibles to go with, but it's imperative that you have that quality - all the great ones do.

When Luke McNown was sprinting toward the lockerroom at halftime - to get warm - with time still on the clock, against the Chargers a few years back...that's kinda the opposite. You took one look at that, and didn't even worry about the skills, you were watchin' a loser.

The coaching staff is doing a lot with a little - there is still a dearth of talent, but it's nice to see a few PLAYAS runnin' around out there.

Seriously, I don't think most Browns fans are too upset with the loss overall because of the way McCoy played. In fact, though they scored only 10 points, the offense actually played decently. And, for the most part, I think Brian Daboll called a decent game, particularly as the game wore on.

There were certain things that were a little disappointing, such as the constant blitzing and leaving Eric Wright exposed when it's already been proven that he can't hang out there in single coverage and be effective. I thought the play calling early on, when they were trying to protect McCoy by using the wildcat, didn't make much sense. I think the fact that Brian Robiskie is essentially useless is disappointing. I think it's amazing that neither of Harrison's hits garnered a penalty.

The point is that with a team like this there is always lots of little disappointments. But as I noted in my column, this is the 6th straight game in which they had a lead, so that's something. And, again, McCoy showed some real toughness out there, taking some pretty big hits, getting sacked 5 times, and still coming back at the end of the game to lead a late touchdown drive.

I thought the play calling early on, when they were trying to protect McCoy by using the wildcat, didn't make much sense. I think the fact that Brian Robiskie is essentially useless is disappointing. I think it's amazing that neither of Harrison's hits garnered a penalty.

Umm... Wright is no better when they aren't attempting to pressure the QB.

They can either give QBs and receivers all day to get loose and find seams everywhere or they can create pressure (theoretically) and leave Wright exposed for less time (theoretically). The issue is not in them wanting to create pressure. The issue is that they don't have the talent to do it w/o selling out on the blitz and that Eric Wright is human waste on the football field.

A novel approach might be to try and upgrade your DL and your CB position. Hiding it does you know good. Teams are going after Wright regardless of down and distance and regardless of who is coming on a blitz.
