Hammer & Nails

Unread postby peeker643 » Tue Oct 05, 2010 11:46 am

That's what I'm titling my Hillis & Ward article that I'll put up later.

Mostly because it will make JB sick but partly because I like how it sounds in terms of building a physical reputation. Also Because 'Ron Wolfley & Nails' sounds shitty.

One guy on offense, one on defense. "Hammer & Nails"

Perfect. Almost like a bad buddy cop TV show.

Take that JB. :lmfao:

Shouldn't it be hammer & hammer? The nails are the ones who get driven down.

Or maybe Ball-peen and Claw?

I know. I felt like a gay, junior member of the Browns PR staff when I wrote it.

I think it's just odd to either read or write anything remotely positive about this club.

The masses will suck it up and send me an adoring email though while the discerning board posters flame me for my optimistic gushing.

What can I say? Being there Sunday was enjoyable for the first time in years. And it was the Browns playing the heavy and the villain.

I need to see what one of those positive emails looks like before I die though.

You know how I know you're gay....?

This editorial feedback woulda been helpful..... two hours ago.

So let's say it's more like a Lenny Dykstra nails or the verb 'Nail'. And not the nsfw version.

Fer crissakes, I wrote it between meetings and before lunch. And mostly because we have nothing to run til about 7pm tonight. Gimme a break. ;-) ;)

Don Rogers and Eric Turner, eh? Let's hope TJ Ward doesn't croak while still playing in the NFL.

Seriously, though, I agree totally that this team has missed a hitter like Rogers and Turner, and Ward's toughness should rub off on the rest of the D. Hell, Eric Wright already thinks he's a big-time hitter.

Yeah, I know. In trying to write a relatively upbeat article I had to bite my tongue on the dead DB jokes.

But hey, Felix Wright and mark Harper are alive and doing well. They just didn't do much hitting.

Yes Yogi.

Yes.

That was the motivation behind it. JB is too high brow for blue collar metaphors.

Actually he just hates Hillis and the Hillis-love and that was actually the motivation for the article.

Now, when others start calling these guys those names, y'all remember where ya heard it first. :hide:

Not sure who is who but Mike Pereira things Hammer or Nails should be made an example out of.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20 ... -hit-hard/

Now that he's working for FOX, former NFL Vice President of Officiating Mike Pereira can say a few things he wouldn't have said a year ago. He feels strongly that Browns safety T.J. Ward should face a steep fine for his hit on Bengals receiver Jordan Shipley.

"Nobody in the league likes to say that somebody took a cheap shot at somebody. But I'm not in the league,'' Pereira told Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. "And I think it was a cheap shot and I think he deserves to be hit and he needs to be hit hard.''

Pereira said there is "no place" in football for that type of hit and he can live with people thinking the league is making an example of Ward.

"I think it's one of the worst I've seen in awhile. I think it's the exact hit that the NFL is trying to get out of the game. There's no intent to tackle," Pereira said.

While Pereira no longer works for the league, his words surely carry weight. And his thinking is probably in line with how the NFL views things.

It's safe to say Ward will be hit plenty hard, even if our PFT readers didn't think Ward took a cheap shot.

Apparently there is no place for a defender to try to jar a ball loose from a reciever with an explosive hit in football anymore. And apparently jarring hits are not forms of tackles. TJ should have squared him up and wrapped him up. Silly TJ.
In the end, we're all "only for a limited time," you guys.

If Pereira sees it that way, then I am 10x more committed in my opinion of a good, clean hit.

Pereira was simply awful at his job. I'll never forget the back tracking on the bottle gate ruling.

This is obnoxious; the hit is no worse than plenty of others that happen every year.

So the appropriate response to a hit he doesn't even consider late is for someone to retaliate. Yeah, that's a completely reasonable take if the league should be eliminating really hard hits. What an asshat.

I guess I am a bit in the minority in thinking that Ward's hit was a penalty in the strict interpretation of the "defenseless receiver" rule. But Pereira is an idiot...he is inarticulate (he makes the referee Jeff Triplette sound like Winston Churchill), and never, and I mean never, thinks an official makes an error. Hell, when he was on the NFL network last year, he even defended the Steeler first down that was clearly short. Anyone who actually takes what he says seriously is a fool.

I don't think he meant 'hit' as in struck. When he said Ward needs to be 'hit and hit hard' I'm pretty sure he was talking about the fine.

You are probably correct. I saw him quoted on another site, glancing over what was quoted here, and it read very ambiguously.

Peeker, apparently Dennis Manoloff is a follower of your work...

Should see if the PD will give you licensing rights. Or for at least stealing a headline.

There will soon come a day when a guy like Dennis Manaloff is looking for work at a place like TheClevelandFan.com

He'll probably come up empty in that pursuit.

Well, this is a surprise. Manloaf seemed like he was chock full of well thought out, original takes when I saw him on CLC. Hard to imagine why a guy that bright needs to steal material.

To be fair, I hardly think the Hillis/Ward angle is a tough one to dig up. But why the PD can't do it before we do is a bit strange. All of us have actual jobs other than this.

Also, Gary Benz uploaded an article on Hillis right after I did which also beat manaloff and the PD by 20 hours. It will run in a bit because we didn't want them back to back on the front page here.

What good would tackling a receiver who caught the ball while already in the end zone do? The intent was to knock the ball loose. Mission fucking accomplished.

Exactly. This guy makes no sense. The only thing I can figure is that Pereira wanted to get back into the spotlight for a few days. Mission fucking accomplished too, unfortunately.

Although, the thought that Pereira is helping make Ward into some sort of badass, hard hitting, thug who could give two shits if someone lives or dies...well, it doesn't make me cringe to have a guy with that rep. So, thanks douche. :thumb up:

More praise for Hillis as he's the AFC North High Energy Player of the week, whatever that is.

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcnorth/post/_/id/18485/page/player-of-the-week/afc-north-high-energy-player-of-the-week-4

Turns out he's leading the AFC North in YPC at 4.9. Me likey. He's also 3rd in the AFC with 3 20+ yard rushes. Can't find any info in YAC (Yards after contact) but I'm sure he'd be near the top there as well.

This all proves what we've seen on the field. Peyton Hillis is a bad man with the ball in his hands.
