Best in YOUR Lifetime: The Defense

Unread postby peeker643 » Wed Jul 28, 2010 12:18 pm

Let's account for the varying schemes by doing the defensive side this way:

DL (5)

LB (6)

CB (4)

S (4)

Punter (3)

Again, should be contingent on their contributions as a Cleveland Brown. Brad Van Pelt had a fine career but he shouldn't make your Browns LB list ;-) ;)

LB (6) Clay Matthews, Mike Johnson, Chip Banks, Jamir Miller, Dick Ambrose, Pepper Johnson

CB (4) Hanford Dixon, Frank Minnifield, Ron Bolton, Anthony Henry

S (4) Eric Turner, Don Rogers, Thom Darden, Felix Wright

Punter (3) Chris Gardocki, Dave Zastudil, Brian Hansen

Peek, I think your list about covers it for anyone in their 30s or younger. I'm wracking my brain to come up with anyone else going back to '86/'87, when I first really became aware of Browns players as a kid, and I got nothing beyond what you posted.

Shaun Rogers belongs in the discussion for best among DL/NT since the mid-80s. That's about all I'd add.

Doesn't this guy make the group just based on this?

Galley Boys are slop on top of a so-so burger and a bun you coulde get from a Covneninet food mart generic pack. They the Antoine Joubert of burgers; soft, sloppy, oozing grease and cheap sauce and extremely overrated by a biased fan base. Proof that if you throw enough cheap sauce shit on a burger you still can't overcome the lame burger. -JB

It might be close for that generation but I like seeing what the older than 45 crowd and the younger than 25 crowd throw down on their lists.

What strikes me is how bad some spots are on both sides of the ball. ;-) ;)

Off the top of my head? No

Off the top of Bradshaw's head? Probably.

Not unless I was watching games from the womb. ;-) ;)

I feel like my list at the absolute earliest can't start until '88. The fumble is the first game I can even remember bits of. I was 6 at the time. I'll try this list sober, no reference to Bob Evans (wtf?)

DL (5) MDP, Shaun Rogers, Rob Burnett, Carl Hairston, Geezus... Anthony Pleasant? Orpheus Roye?

LB (6) Clay Matthews, Andra Davis, Jamir Miller, Mike Johnson, D'Qwell, I give up

CB (4) Minnefield, Dixon, Anthony Henry, Bodden

S (4) Eric Turner, and ?? Earl Little, Sean Jones, and Robert Griffith

Punter (3) Gardocki, Tupa, Zastidul

That's a shitty ass list.
In the end, we're all "only for a limited time," you guys.

Damn Z- That's a list worthy of condolences.

The offensive side for anyone who didn't see Jim Brown or leroy Kelly is sad enough.

This is a pretty shitty franchise. :pb:

Pretty good top-header there and got no real qualms...

I'll add that Alzado was still a force his final 3 years...

Liked Elvis Franks, but I don't see him crackin the above list...

Corey Fuller was ok too...

Steve Cox is definitely a punter for me...

Damn, this woulda been more interesting picking the WORST players

By the way - my first Browns memory is of my Dad going up a ladder to point the antenna towards Toledo to try to pick up the 64 championship game (im my mind, the game was played in a raging blizzard- but it was just the bad reception)

Tough trying to compare guys like Franklin, Parrish, Galen Fiss, Bill Glass, Dick Schafrath, et al...who could no way play in today's NFL...with even mediocre players of today

It doesn't make any difference how they compare to today's players or whether or not they could play in this era. Its about who were the best Browns players in your lifetime

In their time they were as good as anyone else who was played he game at the time if not the best.

Hickerson and Schfrath were epic, household names and if you want to compare, imagine todays candy assed QB's and WR's going up against Sam Huff, Deacon Jones, or Dick Butkus.
