I think the real story is that he just couldn't get the job done. I'm sure he didn't feel great about it, but he didn't appear to be ready to jump off a cliff either. His kids played indoor baseball in Willoughby with a group of kids from Beachwood. Also football with the same crew, and, most of the parents had good things to say about the guy, especially concerning how much time he spent with the family despite being away quite a bit. He became less and less comfortable being seen at his kids games as time went on, for obvious reasons.
I wasn't much of a fan of the guy as a coach, he definitely took on more facets than he was able to handle, especially at that point in his pro coaching career, but I will say this; He's been a figurehead for the faction that want to blame the disaster that is the New Browns on him. When in reality he left them in better shape than when he came in. It was in piss-poor shape, but if you remember, The Browns were a disaster from the Clark regime, WITH HUGE CAP PROBLEMS. Butch didn't leave them with much, but at least they had some money to spend to try to get out of a mess.
