Saw the press release while giving the Browns yet another season ticket payment after another losing season. I just keep thinking that the year I stop buying tickets is the year everything turns around. Pathetic

Good pick up & T Smith cut

Potentially good signing.

McKinney was IRed last year w/ a bum neck and released, but he can play RG or C, and he's still very young - and good sized.

If he's right physically and he's in at RG, all of a sudden the strating OL now has a composition that gives us some hope:

OLT - Shaffer
OLG - Steinbach
C - Fraley
RG - McKinney
RT - Sowells or Mother Cookoo

Now we can still draft a kid OLman or two, but they can come along slowly, and serve as depth.

The gaping holes where we got nada as far as I can see are one CB , and one DE.

War: draft flexibility

BTW - Terrell Smith was cut. Interesting given all the available cap room. I thought JaLew was a I back guy who liked a FB, so it can't be a 1 back thing, can it? Or is Phil finding rom for Vickers?

I'd tend to think we'd be better off counting on Sowells at RG than we would McKinney. Hasn't played since the Phins' 13th game in 2005, he looks more like center depth (with upside) to me.

The Browns really need a LT too. Then they can move Shaffer back to RT.
Coming from a Wolverine, we're the football equivalent of a formerly abused wife of a meth addict who just remarried the safe nice guy. We're just glad we have someone who's aware that it's a rivalry and that tackling on defense is integral. Baby steps.

Each year there seems to be more and more times where I really think I'm a total asshole for going to those games. A perfect example was the Denver game. Over in 10 minutes, no life or desire to be there from the players. I walked out of there thinking, man, I really don't like doing stupid things, but what the hell am I wasting time and money on. This happened more than once this year.

Hey, just the concept that we have two guys who both might not suck battling it out for a starting position is a huge improvement.

Except I keep tellin' yah, Sowells is a Tackle. :-) :)

Which is exactly why we went after Stenbach and not Dockery or Dielman first in FA. If we don't find a starting RT by the 2nd round, or if Tucker folds up again, Steinbach will be the LT.

Can you clarify what you mean by "back"?

At 6'3, probably not for long.

shaffer played LT when he was with the Falcons. LT on a team with a left handed quarterback is actually basically right tackle on most other teams. The formations flip and you usually see the WS DE. He was actually pretty good there.

So IOW, he's never played RT.

I see your point, I understand your point, but I think you are making too big a case out of Vick's LH and making misassumptions.

Shaffer has never played ORT. His drops and techniques are that of a OLT , he's played against other teams' RDE's not LDE's - other teams' don't move their defensive line dpending on the QB they play.

Shaffer is an OLT. This would be a position change.

Not saying he can't do it, just sayin' he hasn't done it. He's not moving back.
