Looks like Talks between the Ravens and Lewis has soured, so he's coming up here to talk with Phil.

Depending on the length of contract (and how stupid can Lewis' agent be to demand a long-term deal) I'd be interested.

If Droughns and Lewis can handle 200 carries each and that gets them by until the bumper crop of running backs in 2008, and you can get Lewis on the cheap, why not?

Hey, maybe Droughns/Lewis could be our Dellucci/Michaels platoon.

If he is dirt cheap, then yeah, I have no problem with it. But I hope it doesn't change their stance on drafting A Pete this year.

Busy day& night today, so I may not get to have fun w/ y'all going back n forth analysing. But again, rather than necesarrily debating yr opinion on Ja Lew (feel free but it don't mean spit) , WTF do you think this means vis a vis what Phil is up to? And what if they actually sign this guy? What does THAT do for the draft?

This one is just so damn interesting.

I'd no longer be a-doubting, and come on without, come on within...

Pat mac said that Drones roster bonus is due on the Ides. Hmmmm.....

I think there are 2 very realistic possibilities here:

1. Lewis is signed, Droughns is released and A-Pete is still on our board.
2. Lewis is signed, Droughns gets his bonus and you can cross A-Pete off the list.

With them already extending Wright, I would think it is either or with Lewis and Droughns (if AD or AP or ADP is the pick). They could use either one of them to take a brunt of the beating for another year, allowing A-Pete to follow the Ced Benson plan.

I think it is more likely, they will attempt to low ball 8 ball, and pass on Peterson. Like Furls has pointed out many times, next years draft is loaded with running backs, but the QB prospects are slim.

They appear to be thinking get by with a couple of veteran running backs for another year, and taking Brady Quinn.

Pup, I agree.

I think it is very possible you are seeing a stop-gap measure being applied to the RBs here where they sign Lewis and go with a potential Lewis/Droughns combo for next season, with the intent of getting one of the many talented backs in the 2008 draft. And, if that is the case, it is going to be Quinn with the #1 pick.

I agree. Platoon Lewis/Droughns. Draft Quinn. Let Chuckie and Derek take a beating while we build the O-Line.

I'm down with that. Use this year as a year to build cohesiveness on the o-line with new additions Steinbach and hopefully two day one picks. Then next offseason, go get a 1st or 2nd round o-lineman and put Quinn in there.

I'd be much happier with accepting a shitty 2007 if a plan like this was in place, rather than keep spinning our wheels with trying to go from loser to winner all in one offseason.

Someone will over pay for Lewis. I hope it's not the Browns.

Certainly there is no reason to go get a mediocre back. Hell, that's all they have now.

It would be an exception for the guy, at his age, with his wear and tear to bounce back from 2 consecutive lack-luster seasons.

If it isn't going to make the team better, why do it?

But it will. I would take Lewis over any back the Browns currently have. He made a pretty nice run in the second half of the season once Billick started using him more. He is not a long term solution, but he is better than Droughs and if you can get them to co-exist for a year, I don't see the negative.

Probably. And I hope not too. It has to be on the cheap, or send him packing.

Unless Jamal is impactfully cheaper than Reuben, I pass on this cokehead convict.

Droughns got a bad rap last year. He was hurt, and the line sucked even worse than the previous year ... which we all thought was impossible.

Maybe it's just me, but I think Droughns is still a productive runner, and every bit the equal of the 8 Ball Jamal I saw last year. I have absolutely no problem with a situation that sees Reuben as the lead back, and getting 20 carries a game if hes healthy.

This all said, once RBs approach 30, it's pretty much over for them. Theres exceptions to that rule, but the stats are damning.

Me, I'm saying one more year of Reuben. He turns 30 in August 2008, and it would be foolish to count on him past this year.

The Browns have to find a young runner. FA never yields any legit RB options. Maybe its APete, maybe it's Hunt/Bush in the 2nd, maybe it's McFadden or Ray Rice in the 1st next year. I've always been a proponent of using two backs to share the 35 carries a game ... even before it became en vogue last year.

Maybe this is tied to Droughns roster bonus due soon.

Im sure it is. I'd be surprised if the Browns are intent on going into the season with the Droughns/Jamal duo.

I'm assuming they're looking at it from the perepsective that, given Reubens roster bonus (due on March 15), 8 Ball might be cheaper.

Don't you listen to Feinstien(sp?)?

'Twas entrapment, and Jamal only plead down to jail time because he didn't want to risk it in front of a jury. The judge even said so!

And then the Easter Bunny flew out of Santa Claus' ass and gave Feinstien a sucker.

As for JB's question re: the draft, it means Phil is preparing to fuck us by passing on the best NFL RB of the next decade in order to take a QB. All I have to say is that it had better be JMR, and he'd better be right.
